Kinder Surprise Chocolate Eggs are listed as a widely popular candy across the globe – except in the United States. Kinder Surprise Eggs have always been prohibited in the Unites States. As per A 1938 regulation, it is considered as a “non-nutritive” object. It doesn’t meet FDA regulations and is not compliant with the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
2. Beluga Caviar
The beluga sturgeon is considered as the largest of the sturgeons, weighing over 900 kilograms and measuring more than 4.5 meters. Beluga caviar differs in color from light to dark grey. It takes up to 25 years for the female beluga to produce and mature eggs. It is listed as one of the Foods That Are Banned in United States due to overfishing and poaching.
Haggis is a type of pudding prepared with liver, heart and lungs of a sheep. Well, yeah it’s a wholesome sheep cuisine! The dish served with mixed with beef and oatmeal, seasoned with cayenne peppers, onions and other spices. In 1971, the United States banned food made from animal lungs. However, Haggis is the national dish of Scotland and is accompanied by mashed potatoes and turnips.
4. Sassafras Oil
Sassafras oil is extracted from the sassafras tree’s dried root bark. Many American tribes used this tree bark for medicinal purposes including acne, urinary disorders, and fevers. It also helps treating trauma and rheumatism. Sassafras was known as a main element in many root bears. In 1979, the FDA banned sassafras oil, flavorings or food additives as it was no longer safer for human consumption thus entered in the list of Foods That Are Banned US.
5. Unpasteurized Milk
Unpasteurized milk hasn’t been heat-treated, or pasteurized to kill any bacteria. Raw milk comes directly from an animal’s udder and carries a higher risk of being adulterated. US banned unpasteurized milk as the bacteria cause foodborne diseases and are a threat for children.
The ortolan is a tiny bird weighs less than an ounce. Once a controversial meal in France, the bird is meant to be eaten “whole,” and served with the head attached. In the 1990s, France banned the selling of small bunting. France prohibited the killing, smuggling, or cooking of the bird across the European Union or the United States is considered as a crime.
7. Casu Marzu
It is also known as “maggot cheese”! The cheese makers set it outside uncovered, allowing flies to lay eggs inside it. Then maggots start feeding on the cheese and produce enzymes for fermentation. It is counted under “illegal” activity in the United States as it is unpasteurized and is too toxic for consumption.
8. Shark Fins
There is a wide market for shark fins to make shark fin soup, an exotic Asian dish. Shark fins are extremely popular in Asia and obtained from pharmacies, food stores, and fishing areas. The act of shark finning is termed as “reckoned” illegal by the United States government. “Finning” is the act of cutting off a shark’s fin and is thrown back in the sea, bleed to death.
9. Ackee Fruit
Ackee seems to be a delicious fruity treat! But if eaten improperly, it can cause vomiting leading to a coma or death. In Jamaica, the harmful effects of Ackee fruit are termed as “Jamaican Vomiting Sickness.” Due to its adverse health effects, the import of fresh Ackee is banned in the US.
10. Mirabelle Plum
The Mirabelle plum is the oval-shaped, small, and dark yellow fruit. It is best known for its sweet flavor and used in fruit dessert pies. The fruit is a native of France and has been supported by a Protection Geographical Indication since 1996. It has been promoted as a rich “regional” product, thus it is almost impossible to get this fruit into the US.
