1. Rise of Islam (570-632 AD)

3. Defeat of the Spanish Armada (1588)


In 1588, an invincible Spanish naval fleet led by the Duke of Medina Sidonia was dispatched to overthrow the Queen Elizabeth I of England. The hostility was due to Britain’s involvement in the Spanish Netherlands and to extend control over the Pacific and the Atlantic. Had the Spanish not been defeated, then the British colonial empire would not have existed. It is considered one of the top 10 events of history.

4. American Civil War (1861-65)

American Civil War was fought between the Northern or United States and the slave states of the South that announced their secession from the US. The major contention was the issue of slavery which the newly elected president Abraham Lincoln was determined to eliminate. One of the top ten events in American history, the war led to abolition of slavery and equal rights for the blacks.

Russian Revolution is collectively referred to the sequence of revolutions in 1917 Russia, which led to the dismantling of the Tsarist Autocratic rule. Considered one of the important historical events in the world history, it led to the rise of the political ideologies of Socialism or Marxism as an alternate to democracy. It also led to the Soviet Union’s rise as a super power which impacted the world politics for the latter half of the 20th Century.

8. Rise of Hitler (1919)


Adolf Hitler’s rise to power in Germany began in 1919 in the aftermath of the World War I. Hitler was the chief propagator of the ideology of Nazism which also incorporated anti- Semitism and biological racism. The Nazi ideology led to the Jewish massacre during the following decades and is responsible for the Palestine issue and most of the Arab- Jews conflict.

9. World War II (1939-45)


World War II was a major factor in shifting the centre of power from Europe to the US. One of the top ten events in world history, the war drained the European countries economically. The war also led to the elimination of colonialism from the face of the world, leading to the independence of many African and Asian countries.

10. Atomic Attack on Japan (1945)


In retaliation of Japan’s military action on Pearl Harbour, US threw two atom explosives on the Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This was the only time in history that nuclear weapons were used in the warfare. The destruction made Japan surrender and contributed a lot in the rise of the US as the world power. One of the important historical events, it led to the nuclear arms race which clouded the world during the cold war.
