3. Defeat of the Spanish Armada (1588)

In 1588, an invincible Spanish naval fleet led by the Duke of Medina Sidonia was dispatched to overthrow the Queen Elizabeth I of England. The hostility was due to Britain’s involvement in the Spanish Netherlands and to extend control over the Pacific and the Atlantic. In retaliation of Japan’s military action on Pearl Harbour, US threw two atom explosives on the Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This was the only time in history that nuclear weapons were used in the warfare. The destruction made Japan surrender and contributed a lot in the rise of the US as the world power. One of the important historical events, it led to the nuclear arms race which clouded the world during the cold war.
