These sites allow people to create new relationships, reconnect with friends and family and increase communication. Creative expressions in the form of messaging, blogging, photo storage, games, event invitations, and many others have become a source of entertainment. Few of these websites have also bought together people of like minded and have exposed them with various ideas from every nook and corner of the world. Created by Mark Zuckerberg and launched in 2004, Facebook is a social networking site owned and operated by Facebook, Inc.. Currently it has 900 million active users. Initially the website was created only for the Harvard students but gradually with user support it has become a world obsession. Friend invitation, chatting, automatic notifications of someone’s update, photo upload, status update etc are some of its activities.
Twitter is an online social networking service and micro blogging service and was created and launched by Jack Dorsey in July 2006. Soon it gained popularity with more than 500 million lively users as of now. Twitter generates over 340 million tweets each day and handles above 1.6 billion search queries per day. It is the second most visited site and thus has been names “the SMS of the Internet”.
Pinterest is a photo sharing social website designed as a pin board by Paul Sciarra, Evan Sharp, and Ben Silbermann and was launched in March 2010. It permits its user to manage and create theme base photo collections, browse other pinboards for inspiration,’re-pin’ images to their own collections or ‘like’ photos. To “connect everyone in the world through the ‘things’ they find interesting” on a global platform of inspiration and sharing is its key motive.
Founded in December 2002 and launched in May 2003, LinkedIn is a public networking site meant for people in professional areas. According to June 2012 report, LinkedIn has above 175 million registered users in around 200 nations and territories. English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, Swedish, Romanian, Russian, Turkish, Japanese, Czech, Polish, Korean, Bahasa Indonesia, and Bahasa Malaysia ate the languages the site is available in.
Originally named as Google Circle, Google+ is a multilingual social networking and identity service launched on 28th June, 2011. Till June 2012 the site has seen around 250 million listed users. Messenger, instant upload, spark, games, hangouts etc are some of its attractive features.
Previously planned as “Myspace and My”, this social site is owned by Specific Media LLC and pop star Justin Timberlake. It was made public in August 2003 and on recent date Myspace has 25 million unique U.S. visitors. MySpace had a major influence in pop culture and music and created a platform for games like Zynga and Rock You.
DeviantArt also abbreviated as dA, is an online community where various user made art is displayed. Opened for public on August 7, 2000 by Scott Jarkoff, Matthew Stephens, Angelo Sotira and others, the site’s main motive is to produce a platform for any artist to exhibit and discuss works. Works are categorised under photography, digital art, traditional art, literature, Flash, filmmaking, skins for applications, operating system customization utilities etc. “Fella”, a robotic cat is the official mascot of the website.
LiveJournal was started on April 15, 1999 by American programmer Brad Fitzpatrick to keep his high school mates informed about his activities. In January 2005, a software company called Six Apart bought the company which operated LiveJournal and in 2007 sold it to Russian media company, SUP Media. Since then it has become a popular website for maintaining blog, journal and dairy. It is also well known among the Russian political pundits for political remarks.
Headquartered in London and owned by the Russian entrepreneur Andrey Andreev, Badoo is a public website which concentrates on dating. With 46 million Visitors per month, the site operates in 120 states and is most admired in Latin America, Spain, Italy and France.
With around 100 million members worldwide, tagged is a social discovery website which authorizes its users to browse the profiles of other members, play games and share tags and virtual gifts. It has been reported that tagged has 5.9 million U.S. and 18.6 million global users per month. The company is based in San Francisco, California, United States and was founded in 2004.
